Chapter 10

“Oswald?”

Oswald turned suddenly to see Zona standing out on the veranda and, to his surprise, realized that she was motioning for him to come out and join her.

“Good morning,” he said, feeling a little self-conscious because of her extraordinary beauty. “Going to be hot again today.”

“This country is always hot.”

“Oh, it’s not so bad in the winter,” Oswald reasoned, trying to sound optimistic despite the already intense morning heat. “We ought to feel lucky that we don’t have to shovel snow or worry about blizzards.”

Zona smiled. “I’d like to see snow some day and I’d prefer a blizzard now and then to our constant heat.”

“You might think so, but you’d soon tire of freezing weather,” Oswald told her. “I’ve never been up in Wyoming, Montana or the Dakotas, but I’ve talked with men who have been there and they say they’d take the heat over the cold any day.”

Zona considered this for a moment. “Maybe that proves that we always want what we haven’t got.”

“I hadn’t thought of it that way, but you could have something there. But what would someone like you have left to want? I mean, you’re already rich and beautiful.”

“You think I’m beautiful?”

“You’re the prettiest woman I’ve ever seen.”

“But not as pretty as your Natalie.” She knew instantly that she’d made a mistake when his cheeks turned crimson and said, “I’m sorry. I had no right to say that.”

“It’s all right.” Oswald came over to stand beside her. “The truth is, I’ve sort of forgotten what Natalie even looked like. I recall the color of her hair and eyes but . . . well, beyond that, I’m not sure anymore other than she was also beautiful and good.”

“I talked to Marshal Long this morning. He says that you’re going down into Mexico together.”

“That’s right.”

“Don’t you realize that Mexico is very dangerous?”

“Sure. But we have to find out who murdered Marshal Atkinson and those Arizona Rangers.”

“My brother shot Marshal Atkinson and was mortally wounded by him. I explained this to Marshal Long, but he said he needed an eyewitness. I told him there were none except my dead brother and father.”

“What about the Arizona Rangers?”

She shrugged her shoulders. “No one knows who killed them. Maybe they were ambushed for their money and horses.”

“I doubt that Marshal Long will accept that as a reason. I think that they were killed by General Escobar or his revolutionaries. We have to find out and bring them to justice.”

But Zona shook her head in disagreement. “There is no justice south of the border. There is no justice even on this side of the border. My father was the law here and my brother would have taken his place as head of our family.”

The young lawyer shrugged. “I better get some breakfast. The marshal says that he’ll be ready to ride south tomorrow.”

“Let him go by himself. If Marshal Long insists on dying, why suffer the same fate?”

“Because I have to go. If Marshal Long hadn’t showed up, I’d have gone down to Mexico on my own.
